From Family Meals to Feeling My Best

A few years ago, life became particularly demanding. My parents became ill. I was travelling to see them regularly, helping with their care, while also working, looking after a grandchild, and keeping the household going.

I remember thinking: if I don't look after myself, something is going to give.

I'd been reading and listening to a lot about gut health. About fermented foods, plant diversity, and the quiet, cumulative power of small nutritional habits. So I decided to try it. Not by overhauling everything. Just by adding.

Sauerkraut on the table. Kefir stirred into sauces. Thirty different plants a week, which sounds impossible until you realise that herbs, spices, seeds, and nuts all count. The family barely noticed. But I did.

My energy was steadier. My sleep improved. My skin started to glow. And despite everything I was carrying during that time, I coped. I genuinely believe it was the way I was nourishing myself that made that possible.

My parents passed away during that period. That was hard. But I came through it feeling stronger than I had any right to expect. And I think about that often.

What I believe about food, health, and feeling well at every age.

Healthy eating should add to your life, not take from it

The goal was never to give anything up. It was to bring more goodness in. More colour, more variety, more nourishment, alongside the food that already makes life feel rich.

Your gut is the place to start

So much of how we feel, our energy, our mood, our skin, our sleep, comes back to what's happening in the gut. Small, consistent habits make a bigger difference than any dramatic overhaul.

Cooking is an act of love. It always has been.

For women who have spent years feeding families, the kitchen is not a chore. It's a space of care and creativity. That deserves to be honoured, not replaced.

Feeling well is not about perfection

There will be days when the sauerkraut stays in the fridge. That's fine. This is about consistent, realistic nourishment, not a perfect record. Progress, not performance.

What’s Made the Difference for Me

Over time, a few habits became anchors. Nothing extreme. Nothing that required a kitchen overhaul or a specialist shopping list. Just consistent, small things, repeated regularly.

Fermented foods every day. Kefir in the morning, sauerkraut or kimchi alongside dinner, miso stirred into soups and stews. A jar of something live always in the fridge.

Thirty different plants a week. Which sounds like a lot until you start counting. A handful of mixed seeds on your porridge. A tin of chickpeas in the curry. Fresh herbs scattered over everything. It adds up faster than you'd think.

Simple additions to family favourites. Not new recipes. The ones everyone already loves, with one or two things quietly added. Nobody needs to know. The nourishment happens anyway.

Moving regularly, sleeping well, and not punishing myself on the days when things don't go to plan.

These are the things I talk about on Glow with Guillie. Not because they're dramatic. Because they work.

The Joy Is Still in the Food

I'm 62. I have more energy than I did ten years ago. My skin is better. My sleep is better. I feel like myself, maybe more so than I ever have.

And I still make the lasagna. I still sit at the table with the people I love. I still cook from scratch because it brings me joy, and because I know that what I'm putting on the table is doing something quietly wonderful for all of us.

That's what I want for you. Not a transformation. Not a before and after. Just that quiet, steady feeling of doing something good for yourself, every day, in ways that fit around the life you already have.

If any of this resonates with you, I'd love for you to come along.
